Who is the Biggest Manufacturer of EV Charging Stations?

The EV charger manufacturer manufactures EV charging stations or charging points that supply electric current to electric vehicles. Currently, there are more than 1.3 million EV charging stations across the globe.

Tesla is by far the biggest manufacturer of EV charging stations, with over 1370 superchargers in the US and 30,000 worldwide. Tesla Superchargers are 480-volt direct current fast-charging systems designed by Tesla, Inc. for electric cars.

What is an EV Charging Station?

An EV charging station, technically known as Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), is equipment that supplies and recharges an electric vehicle. EV charging involves an EV charger that pulls electric current from a 240 volts grid and delivers it to the electric vehicle.

You can charge your electric vehicle by plugging it into an EV charging point or via an app or RFID card. It takes around a minimum of 30 minutes or as long as half a day to fully charge your electric car.

Most EV drivers opt for at-home EV charging points to charge their cars. A home charging point such as a wall socket or an AC fast charger can be used to charge your electric vehicle at home. A three-pin plug with an EVSE supply cable should only be used as an occasional backup.

Famous EV Charging Station Manufacturers

Tesla

With more than 30000 EV charging stations worldwide, Tesla holds the title of having the largest fast-charging station network in the world. Tesla supercharger units have the highest average charging speed, delivering up to 250 kW.

Tesla manufactured all its charging units in California, the US, until 2021, when it opened its second Supercharger production unit in Shanghai, China, to start making more than 10000 charging units per year.

Siemens

Another important player in the EV charging market, Siemens manufactures high-speed AC and DC charging stations. Operating under the Sicharge brand, Siemens offers a charging capacity of 160-300 kW in a single unit making it one of the most energy-saving EV charging stations globally.

Star Charge

Star Charge holds the largest charging network in China, with over 257 000 EV charging units. The charging unit delivers 8 GWh per day to electric cars via AC and DC charging stations.

Star Charge has also partnered with over 60 Auto OEMs, including Porsche, Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen, and BMW.

Besen

Besen has been a leading Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) manufacturer for 12 years to provide customers with the best EV charging solutions. The company manufactured its first electric vehicle charging station in China and currently holds the largest export volume. It also caters to the needs of American and European markets.

Besen specializes in manufacturing EV chargers (Basic, App, or RFID), EV charging cables, adaptors, and connectors. The efficient charger allows you to recharge your vehicle in complex environments, such as cold weather and high humidity. The charging station is safe and easy to install, making it a stable option to use at home.

ABB

Based in Switzerland, ABB is one of the biggest names in the global EV charging station market. The company has manufactured and sold more than 460000 EV charging stations since 2010, including high-speed DC stations.

It offers a high charging capacity with 360 kW in a single unit and claims to charge your electric car in 15 minutes. ABB is planning to establish its charging stations in Latin America, North America, and the Asia Pacific in 2022.

Types of EV Chargers

The four types of EV chargers include fast, slow, rapid, and ultra-rapid EV chargers.

Fast EV Chargers

Fast EV chargers are rated at 7 kW-22 kW. They are found at places like car parks, leisure centres, or supermarkets. The length of charge time depends on the type of vehicle and the unit speed, but a 7-kW charger typically takes 4-6 hours to charge a car with a 40-kWh battery. However, a 22-kW charger may only take 1-2 hours to charge your electric vehicle fully.

Tesla destination chargers offer 11 kW-22 kW of power, but currently, these are only compatible with Tesla models.

Slow EV Chargers

These chargers have a rating range of 3 kW to 6 kW. A three-pin plug will draw around 2.3 kW to recharge the car's battery. It can take a total of 6-12 hours to charge your car with a 3-kW slow charger. You may also want to connect your slow charger to the EV via a cable.

Slow charging is commonly used in homes and sometimes at workplaces too. Installing a dedicated EV charging unit might be a good choice if you regularly charge your car at home.

Rapid EV Chargers

Rapid EV chargers have a cable tethered to the unit to recharge your car via alternating (AC) or direct current (DC). Rapid chargers can deliver as large as 125A to charge your car to 80% in just 20 minutes. The charging rate is rapid at first but slows down after 80% to protect the battery from damage.

A rapid AC charger delivers around 43 kW to charge your electric vehicle to 80% in 25-40 minutes.

Ultra-rapid EV Chargers

Ultra-rapid EV chargers include high-power DC chargers rated at 100 kW or more. These ultra-rapid chargers can deliver as high as 350 KW, slashing charging times down to 20 minutes despite increasing battery capacities. A DC charger can also be used to charge an EV that accepts only 50 kW at maximum as the power won't exceed the vehicle's capacity.

Conclusion

With the rise in electric vehicle users, more and more EV charging stations are manufactured worldwide. An EV charging station connects your electric vehicle to the power source to recharge the car’s battery. Currently, Tesla tops the list as the biggest EV charging station manufacturer. However, other EV charging point manufacturers, such as ABB, Besen, Star Charge, Siemens, etc., also provide efficient energy solutions to charge your EVs. EV chargers can be rapid, ultra-rapid, fast, and slow, depending on the type of EV and unit speed.
